We were visited today by Matt Oldfield, one half of Matt and Tom Oldfield, the brothers behind the Heroes Football book series for children aged 7-12 years old.  Their fun biographies tell the life stories of the world’s greatest footballers from Maradona through to Messi, from Beckham through to Kane.  Matt works with schools, charities and organisations including the National Literacy Trust, to deliver literacy workshops aimed at football fans and reluctant readers.  His workshops aim to combine key aspects of writing (dialogue, character, emotion, setting) with key aspects of football and life (teamwork, bouncing back, achieving dreams).

We were delighted that pupils from Years 5 and 6 from St Mary’s and St Sampson’s could join us this morning to hear from Matt.  Matt also held an assembly with all our Year 7s and conducted a workshop with a group of selected Year 7 students.  Keen fans of the Heroes Football series were able to ask Matt to sign their books and some made a purchase whilst he was here too.

Thanks to Matt and Mrs Lanphier, Head of English, who had arranged the visit.
