The library is kicking off October with a celebration of Black History Month. We are showcasing a wide range of high quality non-fiction titles focusing on Black history, nationally and around the world. We are also featuring some excellent works of fiction by celebrated Black authors, including Sharna Jackson (very popular with our KS3 students) and Dean Atta (targeted at KS4 readers).
Bookopoly is well under way now, with over 50 books read by our students, and 5 spot prizes won already. We are seeing some fantastic book reviews coming in, and are loving the reading recommendations students are swapping among themselves. We’ve also had students reading scripts, song lyrics and poetry for our Alternative Reads section – we’re so impressed by their creativity. Well done to everyone involved – keep up the super work!

We are thrilled to be offering the opportunity for a new batch of students to become Student Librarians. Applications have already been flying in, and we look forward to starting our official training next term. Student Librarians are essential to the successful running of our school library – not only are they fundamental in ensuring books are looked after and shelved correctly, they are key to providing their opinions on all of our new library purchases, making sure that student voice is at the heart of our library.

Our Year 7 Book Tastings have all been completed and every Year 7 has had the opportunity to choose a brand new book to keep, free of charge. Their choices have all been ordered and we are eagerly anticipating their arrival. This year’s titles have included graphic novels, non-fiction, dyslexia friendly books and a wonderful array of stories covering a variety of writing styles and genres. The most popular book this year has been The Nine Night Mystery by celebrated author, Sharna Jackson.

Thursday 9th October is Harry Potter Book Day! We will be celebrating the works of J.K.Rowling with a Harry Potter quiz in the library at lunch time – costumes and props welcome! This is usually very popular and we recommend that teams sign up with Mrs Sirrelle in advance to guarantee a spot. Our quiz theme this year is Songs and Spells.
