Mrs Lister reports: “To mark World Book Day last week, my German classes discussed the importance and joy of reading, not only in English, but also in a foreign language. I started the lesson with a quiz of well known children’s English story titles translated into German and by using current knowledge of German students tried to work out which books they could be. We then focused on Die Kleine Raupe Nimmersatt (the Very Hungry Caterpillar). This well known book is an excellent one to read in German as the story is repetitive so helps imbed the language and familiar words like days of the week and food and drink items are used which builds confidence in the ability to access the story. In addition it is very visual so students can draw the links between the pictures and the words. We watched/read the story via a Youtube link and then I asked them a series of true/false questions to test their understanding. All students really enjoyed this activity and it proved to them that with key words and visuals accessing a foreign language book is achievable. If your son/daughter enjoyed exploring this book there are some excellent ones available as both audio and video books at  German Children’s Stories with Slow Audio – The German Project
