Last weekend was the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh qualifying weekend. Mr Sturla reports: “Sixty eight intrepid students embarked on their DofE Bronze qualifier over 2 days. It was a very hot one this year, so students not only had to cope with the demands of navigation, walking, cooking and camping but also the intense heat.
Day 1 started at Chippenham and students walked 12.6km to their campsite in Calne. They then pitched their tents, had some food cooked on the trangia’s and then embarked on a bit of downtime, which consisted of a football, tennis ball throwing and photography. It was great to see the students interacting and having a great time without the need of their mobile phones.
Day 2 was a trickier day, a 16.3km route which began by walking up the steep hill towards Cherhill Monument. It was a long day for some groups but they showed the values that DofE is all about; resilience, perseverance, teamwork and grit.
I hope the students will remember this experience for years to come, and apply a lot of their experiences to their future studies.
A massive thanks again to Mr Allen and Mrs Burton who supported the students across the 2 days and also the many staff that stayed overnight, it’s hugely appreciated.
Finally a huge well done to the students for their effort and attitude across the weekend!”
Looking forward to many of these students taking on Silver next year.
