Transition to secondary school is a very exciting time, a time of new discoveries and opportunities.  However, it can also be a daunting and stressful prospect.  It is our job to ensure that we do all we can to make the move to ‘big school’ go as smoothly as possible and to ensure each child makes the very best start to their secondary school journey.

Our first correspondence with families was sent out on 1 March 2021.  This letter sets out our plans for the transition period and includes a request for initial information.  You can download a copy of the letter and form here.

In May 2021 we wrote to our new Year 6 families with further information about transition.  You can download a copy of the letter here.

During Terms 5 and 6 Mrs Wiltshire, our Transition Leader and Head of Year 7, visited the majority of the children in their primary school to get to know them and also spoke with their teachers.  The information gained during these meetings was used to place each child in the most appropriate tutor group for them.

We had to take the difficult decision to cancel our usual two in-school induction days which were due to be held in July due to the wide number of primary schools we draw students from.  A letter, with a set of frequently asked questions, was sent out to families at the end of June.  Download these documents here.

Families were advised which tutor group their child would be in at the start of July and invited to make a virtual appointment with their new tutor.  A copy of the letter is available here.  Families were also invited to view our pre-recorded induction video.  Here is a link to that playlist which includes a short tour of the school.

Our final correspondence with families was posted during the last week of term and included a copy of our induction booklet for each child joining us in September.

Term 1 commenced for our new Year 7 students on Thursday 2 September 2021.  This was an Induction Day with students having the opportunity to meet their tutors, teachers and pastoral staff as well as the other members of their tutor group and year group.  Our older Year 10 Peer Mentor students were also in school to support the students on their Induction Day.  On Friday 3 September 2021 Year 7 students were joined by Year 11 and then the rest of the school the following week.  We believed this staggered start aided the students’ transition to Bradon Forest allowing them the chance to explore and acclimatise to their new school before being joined by the rest of the year groups.  You can view some photos of our new Year 7 students here.

Summer School

Our Summer School ran for a limited number of our new Year 7 students at the end of July.  This was extremely popular.  You can view photos from the event on these pages of the website.
